Ubuntu at the Crossroads: Choosing Connection Over Fear

Oct 31, 2024

Today marks the last day of early voting in Tennessee. As you can see from the picture, I completed my early voting for the 2024 election cycle on October 19th. I took Kid President and Kid Vice President with me. As we stood in line, I had conversations with other men about our children, art, Cybertrucks, tint, getting pulled over by the police, vehicle wraps, insurance, and medical billing. The entire mood while we were in line was very friendly and cordial. The line was painted with people of different age groups. I saw multiple Tennessee Volunteer fans and a few Alabama Crimson Tide fans as we prepared for kickoff between the (2) rivals. I mention all of this to talk about the civility that was shown between neighbors. I am quite sure that we had different opinions about what we were about to do but that did not interfere with our conversation and acknowledgement of each other’s humanity.

This is a stark difference to what is portrayed to us in every aspect of the media and from some politicians. I have watched campaign rallies, debates, and interviews from both sides. I have even listened to what some of the Independent/Third Party Candidates had to say about their policies. I have had internal debates with myself about my personal beliefs about policies. For me, there was more than one issue on the ballot because I was not only thinking about myself but I was also thinking about those I love and how my vote could affect them. I hope I never become so callous and overly religious that I become a one issue voter. I have disagreed with all of the candidates about something. To be honest, there is not a presidential candidate alive that holds the same views that I have.

However, let me share a few things with you. I was told several years ago that the way I voted was going to change when I finished seminary. It has tremendously. I never would have entertained a third-party vote because I thought it was a wasted vote. Throughout different election cycles, I have voted differently. Some of those included Independent/Third Party Candidates. I am only telling you this because I am just sharing the fact that I make informed decisions based the platforms that are represented. While I will NOT discuss the candidates that I casted my vote for, I will say that I have learned that my vote does not just affect me.

As we approach Election Night 2024, please remember the lessons that I have taught over the past several months about Ubuntu. We all have our strong opinions about what we think our leaders should do. However, like I tell KP, we have control over ourselves. We can all practice what Michael Jackson said and start with the person in the mirror. I may not be able to change the world at once, but I can make a difference in the world by showing the Spirit of God to everyone who I meet every day. Have you ever heard the old proverb about how to eat an elephant? If we remember that it happens one bite at a time, then we can better understand that we can influence others and teach Jesus to others one small act, word, or encounter at a time. Coach Darrell Long taught me in middle school football that “It’s the little things that count and there are no excuses.” Dealing with people is messy. Sometimes, we have to check each other. Other times, we need to encourage each other. There are times that your enemies become your footstools. While other times, your enemies may become your allies in order for you to make progress in life. The Divine Creator can teach us a lesson either way. I have lived through both examples. May we remember that the Most High is STILL in control despite Tuesday’s results. May we find faith, comfort, and peace in that. Remember these words, “
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity (δειλία) but of power, love, and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 NLT

How do we change the world? One random act of kindness at a time.
